This is the catalog of the exhibition "Renaissance on the Rhine", which is from 09/16/2010 to 02/06/2011 in LVR Landesmuseum Bonn shown. The book contains 598 illustrations, 505 of them are colored. After the catalog are two words of greeting, an introduction and nine essays prefixed to address the targeted issues in depth.

In the introduction, the term "Renaissance" explored and explained what has been understood by the cipher "on the Rhine". If the term "Renaissance" narrows to its art historical importance, it is thought more than one style, because as an intellectual movement. The exhibition "Renaissance on the Rhine" is not an exclusive presentation of outstanding works of art of the 15th and 16 Century, but it is a fairly broad view of art and culture is brought close to those interested.

It is important to know that invaded outside of Italy of the Renaissance style with a long delay. This gives an overview of the Rhineland in the Renaissance of 1450-1600, about the time of the Burgundian hegemony and the beginning of the Habsburg influence on the territorial fragmentation of the Association of Dutch duchies and the Rhineland in European policy and Cologne's reform attempt. What I find interesting the article about the Rhenish humanism and the Renaissance. You read about Nicholas of Cusa, who was originally from the Pope as one of the meditators of Maastricht provides for peace and learns that the entire education system in the Rhineland in the 15th and 16 Century through the influence of the humanists has been changed. Around 1600, the unity of Christendom on the Rhine. Three quarters of the population belonged to the Catholic Church and a quarter had turned to the Reformation.

We learn how humanism has also changed the Rhine, the formation of society and what the characteristics and development of humanism in the Rhineland places to look for and it finally comes, the Cologne University for discussion. Many graduates of the University of Cologne in the Rhineland were given appointments in schools, so that humanism gradually not only in the scholarly world on the Rhine, but also to seep into the culture of the educated citizen could, (see: p.50).
about the history of media innovation at that time in the Rhineland is to teach and to learn that this region was used as an important area of free trade for both goods and for news of any kind. Detail the architecture of the Renaissance is focused on the Rhine. This is also the courtyard of the Cologne city hall into view, which was designed in an antique style with "Blyerck uo antyx. As part of the architectural considerations castles and palaces, as well as stately homes, office houses and town houses are an issue. Many of these beautiful buildings were Unfortunately, the historical lack of interest in the 20 Century to the victim.

About the painter Bartholomew Bruyn the Elder will be informed in detail and I almost forgot, also on the electoral patronage before you get a view of Cologne's old enjoy and can intensify it in the broad, highly informative catalog section. This is organized in:

-Space and the people

-The countries on the Rhine in the European context

-The Renaissance as the innovation process

World on the Move: Renaissance on the Rhine

-Outlook: Rhineland in 1600 -

-New Men, New Frontiers

The featured exhibits are all explained in detail. Fascinated me, the "Astrolabe" by Caspar Vopelius from 1561, the "Epitaph for Heinrich von Wiltberg" by Peter East from 1571, the bust of Charles V, in 1520, the Statue of Fortune "to 1570, the you can usually visit in Gelsenkirchen, the pictures of the high altar of Xanten, of Bartholomew Bruyn the Elder, the many swords and daggers and cups and other treasures from those times. Impossible to all that go into greater detail.

The book shows me that it is worthwhile to visit the exhibition in Bonn. It is very useful to first to read the book, because then you understand better what is there met with visually.

recommended.
