The quality of the pictures I want to give praise to the skies. Only a few art books are of such exceptional quality.

We learn in the context of the essays very much worth knowing about the painter, who is a prominent representative of expressionism and was declared in the 1920s by his contemporaries to an elemental unfathomable phenomenon, (see: p. 10). Christian Saehrendt admits that in the Weimar Republic itself nationalist circles Nolde claimed for itself, he nevertheless remained in the extreme right, controversial.

1937 were confiscated in 1052 of his works, 1941, the artists stop painting. In 1943 his Berlin apartment with most of the original artwork was destroyed. We read in Saehrendts essay that Nolde's art has been used systematically in 1945 as a showcase of German culture and experiences subsequently, how it looked in detail. What is questioned, and what to Nolde's painting in the here and now is fascinating. The painting style of the artist emphasizes the materiality of the paint and points to the element of chance in the process of image formation, (see: p. 16).

We read of Nolde's early years, his training courses at the Art School in Flensburg, his time at art school in Karlsruhe and his job as arts teacher in St. Gallen. The following year he went to art school Adolf Hoelzel, who was among the first proponents of the use of pure color. He studied the works of Wilhelm Leibl, Arnold Bocklin and Max Liebermann and painted academic record as well as impressionist Landscapes (vgl.S. 23).

In Paris, where he stayed for nine months in 1899/1900, he learned the works of Daumier and Manet know who inspired him. With his Danish wife, whom he married in 1902, he lived in a fisherman's cottage on the beach of the island of Als in Denmark. Here 1904 he composed a series of graphic sheets. However, already had the urge to dramatic view of the violent relationship between man and nature. In 1906, he was by the Dresden artist group "Die Brücke" invited to join, but he was already back in 1907.

We read of the first flower and garden images that were created in 1906 and the fact that It was the early flower paintings, have made known Nolde. The images that emerged from 1909, are already showing all the characteristics that make his style. 1910/11 he painted many watercolors to the productions by Max Reinhardt at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus. Then followed discussions with the art of primitive peoples. 1913/14 was the artist ethnographic artist during an expedition to the German islands in the Pacific. The Art of the South Sea Islanders and Others impressed him consistently strong colors and shapes of mask because of where he saw a deep originality of artistic creation.

In the ensuing years, then created Nolde fantastic pictures (See: S.137ff) and landscapes, which are characterized by their few clear Kompositionelinien and characterized the power of color. We read about the further course of life of the artist much detail in terms of his art, his life in the Nazi era and his series "unpainted pictures" (see: p. 258ff), which represent a high point in his work. These images portray the human life, the dance, the play, characters and fantasy figures.

painted these works in mixed media. Part of these images has transferred Nolde in 1945 on the large size of the oil painting. The looseness of his oil paintings, especially the landscape and flower paintings are reminiscent of his Watercolors, which are said to have inspired him to many oil paintings. A major part of his watercolors represent landscapes dar.

The most beautiful watercolors in the book mE "Autumn Sea" are from 1920 and "Evening landscape of North Friesland. Nolde's religious paintings remain foreign to me, although my "Doubting Thomas" is impressive to think of do not like what is seen but clear.

I love Nolde's "Strelitz", his painting "Spring in the Room" from 1904, and his watercolors "maturity rose hips", "sword lilies and poppies," and Big Poppy (red, red, red). Excursion into his dream-like and visionaries I feel as threatening. They are also not my color.
I love diving in marine Nolde's expression "The Sea III", a painting in 1913 and feel like myself mentally refreshed the multicolored water as motivated to be beguiled by the bright red Nolde's there in the summer gardens.

A wonderful book.
